Appreciation of our natural resources and cultural heritage is a key to their preservation. The study was carried with a view to promote ecological awareness in one of the most ecologically important areas of Kashmir, Dachigam National park, only such park in India with species of red deer existing in it, being on the verge of extinction. Reason for carrying out this study was because Kashmir lacks in environmental awareness programs with the proof that till date there is no functional environmental interpretation centre, especially in Dachigam.
The current study included the main aim of designing components for interpretation centre for creating awareness in selected areas of Kashmir Valley which was achieved through visit to interpretation centres to study their components, assessing the roles played by centres in creating awareness among students, visitors and local people & designing components for the selected national park and a wetland in Kashmir valley.
From qualitative & quantitative analysis, it was concluded that interpretation centres provided effective means of environmental education & awareness as well as viable solution for effective communication of natural and cultural heritage. Hence the importance of creating interpretation centres was established & the components were also designed for the same.
